A warm welcome at the
Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology (Physiology I)
Faculty of Medicine of Goethe-University, Frankfurt
Theodor-Stern Kai 7
Director: Ralf P. Brandes, M.D., Professor of Physiology

The focus of the institute is teaching physiology to medical and dental students as well as researching the vascular system. Teaching takes place in tight collaboration with the institute for physiology in our pre-clinical centre. Information on teaching and teaching content in German can be found . The research work is carried out within the Vascular Research Centre. Click for details regarding research and research teams.
Local mediators, like tissue hormones and reactive oxygen species play a central role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. The factors impact on the contractile tone of the cells, control invasion of cells into the vascular wall as well as their proliferation and control the interaction with circulating cells with the vessel wall. Local mediators control such important processes like hypertension, atherosclerosis and angiogenesis.
With this background, the research at our institute covers the following specific aspects:
The institute tightly interacts with the , the , the German Center for Heart and Circulation Research , the collaborative research centre SFB815 of the DFG „“, the collaborative research centre und the collaborative research centre .
As long as the home page "MSc. Mol. Med." is under construction, the information for the cardiovascular course are being hosted here.
In Physiology I different teams are involved in research and teaching.
