Cardiovascular Physiology

Welcome to the
Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology (Physiologie I)

Address:
Faculty of Medicine, Goethe-University
Theodor-Stern Kai 7, Building 75, 2nd floor
60596 Frankfurt, Germany

Director: Prof. Dr. med. Ralf P. Brandes

Tel.: +49 69 6301 6049

The main topics of the institute are basic research of the cardiovascular system and teaching medical students. Teaching is tightly coordinated with the Centre of Physiology and the Institute for Physiology II (Neurophysiology). Information on the teaching staff and the curriculum in physiology can be found here. The research work of the institute is embedded in the Vascular Research Centre Frankfurt (VRC). Research Profile

Local mediators such as tissue hormones or reactivate oxygen species play an important role in the initiation and progression of cardiovascular diseases. They influence the contractile state of the blood vessel and well as cellular proliferation and migration as well as the interaction between circulating cells and cells of the vascular wall. The development of hypertension and arteriosclerosis is strongly controlled by local processes.

On this ground, the research at the institute focuses on the following aspects::

-          Vascular formation of reactive oxygen species: Enzymatic sources and functional consequences.
Impacts of the signal transduction of fatty acid metabolites on the development of vascular diseases
Role of small GTPases and GTPase-activating proteins in the vascular signal transdcution and pathogensis of vascular diseases.

The institute is embedded in the Exzellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System (ECCPS), das Vascular Research Center Frankfurt, the DFG-research group „Signalling durch Fettsäuremetabolite und Sphingolipide“ and the SFB 815 „Redox-Regulation: Generatorsysteme und funktionelle Konsequenzen“.
